The page was reprogrammed with explicit videos of the Muppets, and a note that the page’s content was “brought to you by the letter X.”

The children show’s site posted a message that it was taken down “due to repeated or severe violations of our community guidelines.”

“YouTube’s Community Guidelines prohibit graphic content,” a YouTube spokesperson told CNN. “As always, we remove inappropriate material as soon as we are made aware of it.”

Nonprofit Sesame Workshop apologized Sunday.

“Our channel was compromised and we are presently working with YouTube/Google to restore our original content,” the group said. “We always strive to provide age-appropriate content for our viewers and hope to resolve this problem quickly.”

Two members of YouTube apparently took responsibility for the attack in a message that appeared on Sesame Street’s page. But one of the users named, MrEdxwx, denied he was involved.

“I did not hack Sesame Street. I am an honest YouTube. I work hard to make quality gameplay videos, and most important I respect the community guidelines,” MrEdxwx wrote on his own YouTube page.
